Song:  There's a Snowflake on My Nose

There's a snowflake on my nose, on my nose.

There's a snowflake on my nose, on my nose.

I caught a little flake.

And I give a little shake.

There's a snowflake on my nose, on my nose.

There's a snowflake in my hair, in my hair.

There's a snowflake in my hair, in my hair.

I caught a little flake.

And I give a little shake.

There's a snowflake in my hair, in my hair.

There's a snowflake behind my back, behind my back.

There's a snowflake behind my back, behind my back.

I caught a little flake.

And I give a little shake.

There's a snowflake behind my back, behind my back.

There's a snowflake in my hand, in my hand.

There's a snowflake in my hand, in my hand.

I caught a little flake.

And I give a little shake.

There's a snowflake in my hand, in my hand.

Move and Groove: Freight Train

Freight Train
by Donald Crews

A train runs across this track.

Red caboose at the back.

Orange tank car next.

Yellow hopper car,

Green cattle car,

Blue gondola car,

Purple box car,

And a black steam engine.

Freight train

Moving (chugga-chugga)

Going through tunnels (peek-a-boo!)

Going by cities (hello people!)

Crossing trestles (roller coaster arms-whoo!)

Moving in darkness (good night!)

Moving in daylight (good morning!)

Going, going, gone!

I hope that you see a train today.  Give it a big wave!

Move and Groove: Brown Bear, Brown Bear

Brown Bear, Brown Bear

By Bill Martin Jr., illustrated by Eric Carle

Brown bear, brown bear what do you see?

I see a red bird looking at me.

Red bird, red bird what do you see?

I see a yellow duck looking at me.

Yellow duck, yellow duck what do you see?

I see a blue horse looking at me.

Blue horse, blue horse what do you see?

I see a green frog looking at me.

Green frog, green frog what do you see?

I see a purple cat looking at me.

Purple cat, purple cat what do you see?

I see a white dog looking at me.

White dog, white dog what do you see?

I see a black sheep looking at me.

Black sheep, black sheep what do you see?

I see a goldfish looking at me.

Goldfish, goldfish what do you see?

I see a teacher looking at me.

Teacher, teach what do you see?

I see children looking at me.

(Then repeat all the animals that the children see!)

Thank you Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle!  This book might just be preschool perfection!  There's a gentle rhythm to the text that helps children understand the patterns of language, there are colors and animal sounds to explore, and there's repetition.    This book is everything.

You can use this formula to make up your own rhymes.  I used this pattern for a shape rhyme in the fall.  You can make up your own song by lining up several toys and talking about what each one sees down the line like this:

Teddy bear, teddy bear, what do you see?
I see a baby doll looking at me.

Please enjoy the song, re-read the book, and make up your own song!

Monday Morning Messy Makers: Birds

January 5th is National Bird Day! Keep scrolling to see book recommendations, songs, rhymes, activities, and crafts!

Little Bird, Little Bird

Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Little bird, little bird,
Fly around,
Up to the sky,
Down to the ground.
Little bird, little bird,
Flap your wings.
Open your beak
And sweetly sing.
Little bird, little bird,
Fly to your nest.
Now it is time
To take a rest.

Song

Tune: Hokey Pokey

You weave some grass in,

You pull some twigs out.

You weave some string in,

And you feather it about.

You build a lovely nest,

Sturdy because you know-

That's where your eggs will go!

Make a bird craft!

Craft Instructions:

1. Wrap the large rectangle around the TP tube.

2. Glue on the belly, eyes, wings, and beak.

3. Set the bird in its paper bag nest. Crinkle the edges in to make it cozy and look for more materials in your yard to build up the bird nest, like twigs.

Extra play Ideas:

·        Play pretend and feed your bird using the pieces of yarn as worms. What else do birds eat?

·        Go birdwatching! Read a book about the different kinds of birds in our area and keep your eyes peeled while going on a walk.
